3D Plaque Graphics for Your Custom Plaque
I make a differentiation between laser engraving and laser carving. To me, laser engraving is where
I burn into the wood and laser carving is where I burn away a background to leave the some wood.
This creates a relief and adds depth and dimension. For quite awhile I have wanted to do 3 dimensional carvings. I had played with idea and made a few
test runs but was not quite satisfied with the results. I found a company called Gantry who make
graphics files for laser carving. I was anxious to give these a try. I have been using these little
3d graphics now about a year and I like them. The graphics are expensive and they take about 4 times
the amount of time to produce. They require more power and a very fine lens to accomplish the detail.
This is why most laser engravers do not use them. I use them because I think they look neat and give
that little something special that intensely personal gifts require.
Consider, if you will, my JFK Navy plaque with the Navy Seal compared to the same plaque with the
Navy Seal carved, as seen to the right. The addition of texture and depth add a great deal to the appearance.
The following are some plaques I have created for clients using
these little carvings. Just about any plaque can use one of the designs, although limited, to enhance
it. Imagine my Thoreau plaque with a 3d oak tree or my Indiana plaque with a farm scene so real you
can feel the siding on the barn and feel and almost smell the hay. The graphics can be added for an
additional $15 – $25.
